U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reiterated Tuesday that she won’t intervene in the incredibly agonizing case involving a 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl who is waiting for a lung transplant. Medical experts should make those decisions, said Sebelius, who was grilled by Republicans at a Congressional hearing about the situation involving Sarah Murnaghan, who has end-stage cystic fibrosis.
…“I’m begging you … Sarah has three to five weeks to live. Suspend the rules until we look at this policy,” Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., told Sebelius at a session of a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing.
Oh really, Sebelius? REALLY? Medical experts should make medical decisions?
You mean, kind of in the same way that FDA scientists (who have stated “There is adequate and reasonable, well-supported, and science-based evidence that Plan B One-Step is safe and effective and should be approved for nonprescription use for all females of childbearing potential”) should be allowed to make scientific decisions about drug categorization?
Oh wait. What’s that, Sebelius? You publicly countermanded that FDA statement, and ordered the FDA to deny unrestricted over-the-counter status to Plan B One-Step? Even though you don’t have the legal authority to force the FDA to do that? And then you appealed the legal finding which authorized the FDA to ignore your un-scientific politically-motivated crap?
"Thanks" for letting the experts "do their jobs", Sebelius. And I hope that this unfortunate girl’s parents invite you to her funeral — maybe you’ll get a chance to literally piss on her grave, instead of just spitting on it from a distance.
