There are times during sleep, that I suddenly wake up and catch my breath. I actually gasp for air. Is this normal?

No, that doesn’t sound normal, especially the “gasping for air” part. That makes me wonder about obstructive sleep apnea, where your airway gets kinda constricted as you sleep, and you go for a while without taking good breaths until finally your oxygen-starved brain forces you to wake up and gasp for air. Asthma would also be a possible cause. You should talk to a doctor about this.
