Dr. Cranquis' Mumbled Gripes

I'm an American physician who works in an Urgent Care clinic. I see lots of stupid or funny things that people do with-and-to their health. I cope by mumbling under my breath (and then posting about it on this pseudonymous blog). Thought you might be interested.

(Disclaimer: Questions related to medical topics will be answered to the best of Dr. Cranquis' (and Google's) knowledge, but the internet-delivered wisdom on this blog CAN NOT AND SHOULD NOT SUBSTITUTE for your Real-Life Doctor's personal attention + examination, and your own common sense too! If you think you're having a medical emergency, hang up and go email 911. And since people seem to be a bit confused about this: any "real-sounding" patients names are just horrible puns, and not HIPAA violations.

Dr. Cranquis!

Gazing Gazelle asked about losing weight, and you said drink lots of water but no diet sodas. I've been trying to lose weight for a long time, but I drink diet sodas almost non-stop... at least a two liter a day. If there's no calories/cabs/sugar in the diet sodas, then why are they bad to drink if you're trying to lose weight?

Excellent question, Soda Pop Weasel — and when I wrote that sentence in my reply to Gazing Gazelle, I kinda figured someone would write in asking about it.

I think this article provides a very balanced response re: “Isn’t diet soda a good enough drink when you’re trying to lose weight?” See what you think. It’s not that diet soda is EVIL, it’s just not the BEST — and as a doctor, I try to recommend the BEST.

Cheers!
