Dr. Trix and the Smoking Ostriches
Dr. Trix: Well, Mr. Tine, your child's throat infections, coughing, wheezing, and repeated head colds are quite likely due to the fact that he always smells like cigarette smoke.
Father: Oh.
Trix: Here's some information about the connections between 2nd/3rd-hand smoke and childhood illnesses, which you might want to share with your wife too. Hopefully you can both quit smoking! It would make an excellent New Year's resolution!
Father: Ok. (leaves clinic with the child, goes home and tells his wife, who calls Dr. Trix immediately...)
Mother: I JUST SPOKE WITH MY HUSBAND NICO, AND I AM NOT HAPPY THAT YOU BLAMED MY BABY'S SICKNESS ON OUR CIGARETTE SMOKING! THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOMETHING MUCH MORE SERIOUS GOING ON HERE, AND IT'S YOUR JOB AS THE DOCTOR TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF MY BABY'S CONSTANT ILLNESSES AND FIX IT!
Trix: Hmm... well, since my magic wand is broken, my options are limited here -- Perhaps I could help you put the child up for adoption to a non-smoking family?

Do you think that it would be wise to major in both fields? Is...

Anonymous asked: I'm a pre-med with a love for old people. I just have such a great respect for them, and I want to do everything in my power to make their days as happy as possible. It breaks my heart to see an elderly person alone or sad, I spend some of my free time at a nursing home just keeping them company. I've previously been considering other areas of medicine, but a friend suggested that since...

Dr. Cranquis and the Case of the Itchy Snowpants
Dr. Cranquis: Well, sir, that itchy pink rash on your lower legs appears to be an allergic reaction.
Elderly Guy Patient: NOPE, I'M TELLING YOU DOC, IT'S GOTTA BE FLEA BITES OR LICE OR SOMETHING, CUZ IT STARTED AFTER I WORE MY SNOWPANTS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS WINTER, I BET SOME INSECTS CRAWLED IN 'EM WHILE THEY WAS HANGING IN THE CLOSET.
Cranquis: But I don't see any bites!
Patient: OH I CAN SEE 'EM, LOOK -- (pointing at teeny-tiny reddish spots which seem to be scratch marks and varicose veins) -- THEM ARE INSECT BITES, I TELL YA!
Cranquis: Sir, I can treat you with a cream that would kill most skin parasites, if you insist, but this rash really looks like your skin is allergic to something that came in contact with it.
Patient: WELL IT CAN'T BE AN ALLERGY, THE ONLY THING I'M ALLERGIC TO IS FIBERGLASS, AND THERE AIN'T NONE OF THAT IN THAT THERE CLOSET.
Cranquis: Does the closet have an attic opening?
Patient: NOW WAIT JUST A SECOND... BY GEORGE, DOC, THAT'S IT! THE ATTIC DOOR IS RIGHT OVERHEAD FROM WHERE MY SNOWPANTS AND BOOTS WERE SITTING ALL WINTER! I BET SOME FIBERGLASS DRIFTED DOWN WHEN I OPENED THE ATTIC THIS SPRING!
Cranquis: Case closed. Book 'em, Danno: Aggravated Contact Dermatitis with Fiberglass, with intent to itch.

Anonymous asked: Hey, I LOVE your blog! I just have a quick question, how important is volunteering in a medical setting for getting accepted to med. school? I must admit it is a good reminder to take my meds but is rather annoying when walking around without my meds in my pocket. Once I take my meds about an hour later the dizziness and lightheadedness go away.

Anonymous asked: Hi, Cranquis! Love your blog.
So, I get cold sores maybe once or twice a year. It's not a huge problem for me-- expect for when they pop up, of course. As of late, I've been reading that Abreva doesn't actually work and can sometimes make a cold sore worse. Your thoughts?

Jimmy: no i just had to cough this morning after...
Mom: (pulling out cell phone) LET ME CALL MY MOTHER AND ASK IF ANYONE IN THE FAMILY HAS LUNG CANCER!
Cranquis: Jimmy, you were saying, "You had to cough after" what?
Jimmy: well i had a nosebleed this morning and i couldn't find any tissue so i just kept snorting the blood back and swallowing it and that made me cough.
Cranquis: You're gonna be just fine, Jimmy.
Mom: JIMMY'S GRANDMA WANTS TO KNOW IF IT'S TUBERCULOSIS?!?

I was just thinking, if a person got married in second year of med school, they would be about 23 or 24 right? (If they took the path of med school right after undergrad).
So they would be engaged around 22 or 23. Wouldn't people think that is kind of young? To me, it feels a bit young to be engaged/marrying.
